VMAT treatment (Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy)
VMAT is a form of IMRT in which the radiation dose is delivered to the tumor during the continuous 360° rotation of the treatment unit. The dose distribution is precisely deposited by reshaping according to the tumor’s form. Sessions may use one or multiple arcs for treatment and can pause and restart at specific angles.
This form of treatment requires accelerators to comply with precise and rigorous technical specifications, including high dose rates (the speed at which the dose is delivered), strict control of the accelerator’s rotation speeds, and the movement of the collimator blades, among other factors.
